How to sew a dart the RIGHT way

I've been sewing since I was really little.  I learned from my mom, and after I passed her up in skill level, I sort of just taught myself/figured things out alone.  But there was a lot I did wrong without knowing it!  Those McCalls patterns only give you so much as far as instructions go.  So you can imagine how much I enjoyed fashion school because I learned so many wonderful tips and tricks that changed how I sewed.  I remember calling my mom almost daily telling her about all the things I'd learned.

So today I want to share one of those tips.  If you've been frustrated with your darts looking like a butt chin, this will change everything for you!

Here's what you'll need:

  1. fabric
  2. bodice front or back pattern (or whatever has the dart in it)
  3. ruler
  4. chalk pencil
  5. pins
  6. fabric scissors
  7. sewing machine
  8. pressing ham (yes you need this, buy it if you don't have one)
  9. pressing cloth (I just made one from a small square of cotton broadcloth)
  10. iron with good steaming capability (here's my favorite brand)

Now watch me do it:

Ok now you try!  Go sew yourself a pretty dress!  Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

XOXO
